Bloomingdale High School juniors and seniors took an important step toward financial independence by earning their Personal Finance credit through a series of hands-on, real-world lessons. Throughout the course, students explored essential life skills such as understanding how to read a paycheck, navigating insurance options, managing savings, and learning the basics of investing.
To bring these concepts to life, students wrapped up the unit with an exciting and immersive field trip to Finance Park in Grand Rapids. At Finance Park, students stepped into a realistic, interactive simulation designed to mirror adult financial responsibilities.
Each student was assigned a unique career, salary, and personal life scenario. Using that information, they were challenged to build and manage a monthly budgetâmaking real-world decisions about housing, transportation, groceries, childcare, utilities, and even unexpected expenses like replacing a water heater. The experience required students to think critically, prioritize needs versus wants, and adjust their spending to stay within budget.
The simulation offered a powerful glimpse into the financial decisions adults face every day, helping students better understand the impact of their choices. Many students quickly realized how farâor how fastâa paycheck can go, and the importance of planning ahead.
By combining classroom instruction with experiential learning, Bloomingdale Schools are equipping students with practical tools they can carry into adulthood. Opportunities like this ensure that students are not only learning about financesâbut actively practicing how to manage them.
This practical approach to real-world budgeting is just one of the many ways Bloomingdale is helping students take ownership of their futureâbuilding confidence, responsibility, and the skills they need to succeed long after graduation.
